Now that it’s time to pack up the ornaments and take down your tree, consider disposing of your evergreen in an environmentally-friendly way. Broward County offers a free Chip-a-Tree program where it gives old trees new life by recycling them into mulch used for landscaping throughout the park system. Just remove all of the decorations from your tree and then drop it off at one of the dozen participating locations. Going this route will keep your tree out of the landfill and will help beautify local parks.
The program runs through Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 15. There’s a limit of two trees per vehicle, and artificial trees are not accepted. The regular weekend and holiday gate fee is waived for recyclers who are dropping off their trees during the designated period. Hours vary.
