Bacteria, viruses, germs — yuck!
Many of us think these microorganisms are what make us sick, but only a tiny fraction of the trillions of microscopic organisms that live on and in us actually cause disease.
This is one of the many insights of “The Secret World Inside You,” a special exhibition that just opened at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science. Organized by New York’s American Museum of Natural History, the exhibition explores the rapidly evolving science that is revolutionizing how we view our health and understand the inner workings of our bodies.
Through Sept. 8, the exhibit takes visitors on an interactive journey through the human body to explore the microbiome, the vast community of bacteria, viruses and other microbes that is said to be its own organ. Highlights include:
- An immersive light and mirror display representing the microbes, which number more than the stars in the Milky Way.
- Large digital interactives that explore where microbes live, how they affect our bodies and what happens when the microbiome is unbalanced.
- A live presentation in which a specialist engages audiences to explore microbe diversity and how our actions affect these populations.
- Gigantic models, vibrant images and hands-on exhibits that bring the invisible world to life.
