A distinguished career culminates with a crescendo this month as Miami Children’s Chorus annual spring concert honors its Music Director Emeritus Timothy A. Sharp in his final season performance with the chorus.
On June 2 at the University of Miami, “Let The Children Sing” will feature MCC’s three ensembles performing works that highlight Sharp’s 30 years as music director of the chorus. Also Benjamin Britten’s children’s opera The Little Sweep, directed by Sharp, will be presented.
“35 years ago I met two people who would impact the trajectory of my life’s work,” says Sharp. “James D. Ewing, a music teacher, and Doreen Rao, at that time music director of the Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus, helped me see the opportunities for making high-quality music with young voices. When the Miami Choral Society visited me to inquire if I was interested, it became the start of a 30-year labor of love.”
Since 1965, MCC has used the medium of choral music to develop the artistry of young people in the county age 8-18. Studying and performing standard and experimental forms of music, the singers have garnered praise from music professionals and international audiences while amassing prestigious credits that include performances with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, Florida Grand Opera and the former Florida Philharmonic Orchestra. The chorus has also sung with André Rieu and Ethan Bortnick on PBS TV shows; with Queen Latifah at the Super Bowl; and with Gloria Estefan and Jon Secada, among others.
“I’ve enjoyed seeing all that the children of the MCC have been able to accomplish through their hard work and commitment to artistic excellence,” Sharp says. “I couldn’t be prouder of what we have been able to do together.”
The concert is 4-6pm at the UM Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Dr., Miami. A reception in Sharp’s honor will follow the concert. Concert tickets are $25, adults, and $10 seniors and children. Concert and reception bundles are $40 and $30, respectively.
