For families with a creative spark, the Perez Art Museum Miami’s (PAMM) PAMMPort Kids’ Tour offers an engaging experience that turns the typical museum visit into an interactive adventure. Designed with children in mind, this tour transforms art appreciation into hands-on exploration, making learning lively and fun for young visitors.
This self-guided audio tour takes children on an artistic journey through PAMM’s Overview Galleries, featuring a range of works from the museum’s permanent collection. As families move through six galleries, kids engage with different artistic concepts while completing activities in an accompanying activity booklet. The tour is thoughtfully designed to make art accessible and fun, encouraging children to explore the museum’s unique collections.
The tour begins in the Nedra & Mark Oren Gallery, where children learn about abstract art through shapes, forms and lines. They’ll hunt for circles, rectangles and cubes while imagining how they might turn abstract shapes into pizza toppings – even though they probably just prefer a plain cheese slice anyway! The audio guide prompts kids to trace lines in the air with their fingers and identify interesting patterns throughout the gallery. This hands-on approach helps young minds understand that abstract art isn’t random; it’s filled with deliberate artistic choices.
The Lori & Milton Ferrell Gallery focuses on portraits and encourages kids to examine facial expressions and emotions captured by the artists. Children are prompted to notice whether portraits feel serious or sad, then draw those emotions as emojis in their booklets. The gallery asks them to imagine having their own portrait created; what colors would they choose? Would the background be abstract, or would it show a specific place, like their bedroom? What expression would they wear? This imaginative exercise helps children understand that portraits are more than just pictures of people – they’re windows into personality, mood and the subject’s story.
In the Collection Gallery, contemporary works take center stage. They imagine textures, sounds and even smells associated with the pieces, discovering how modern artists use unexpected and unconventional materials to tell stories. Kids are challenged to find artworks that might feel bumpy or smooth, cold or warm, wet or dry.
The Gloria and Howard Scharlin Gallery dives into color exploration, where kids learn how artists experiment like scientists, organize colors like mathematicians, and respond to music like composers. Children can create their own colorful artwork in their booklets while listening to specially selected songs, experiencing firsthand how music influences artistic choices.
The tour concludes in the Neerja Sethi and Bharat Desai Gallery, celebrating artists from diverse cultures who use their work to tell stories about their backgrounds and homelands. They’ll embark on an imaginary journey, using their fingers to walk through the artworks while learning about different cultural traditions, colors and materials that connect to the artists’ heritage. This gallery encourages families to discuss their own cultural backgrounds and the traditions they celebrate at home, showcasing how art can be deeply personal.
PAMM’s waterfront location offers breathtaking Biscayne Bay views and beautiful outdoor spaces, making it perfect for a full family outing – even if one of your little ones isn’t artistically inclined. Whether your children are budding artists, or simply curious explorers, the PAMMPort Kids’ Tour will surely be an enriching cultural experience.
