For all their wisdom, guidance and unconditional love, every day should be Grandparents Day – but on September 8, we get to officially celebrate the difference they make in our families’ lives. Here are some suggestions to make the day special.
Cook Together – Have grandma and grandpa share one of their favorite recipes and then have the kids prepare it – with their help. They will be grateful to pass down family recipes while making memories with the kiddos in the kitchen. Add to the excitement by creating a special apron for each family member. Retailers, craft stores and online vendors sell plain aprons and iron-on letters and patches that you can personalize them with.
Memory Lane – Printed photos have gone by the wayside these days, but luckily, parents – and grandparents – still have albums and boxes filled with actual photos. Dig out yours and have the grandparents do the same, then gather around while you flip through the pages and share family stories with the kids. It’s fun for them to see that the adults in their lives were once children too.
Garden Together – Slip on some gardening gloves and start a family garden. It can be as easy as an herb or window garden, or an outdoor patch or box. Beans, cucumbers and green onions are all good choices for our balmy fall climate. If you live close enough, the grandparents and grandkids can continue to tend to the garden together as the plants grow.
Video Call – If grandma and grandpa don’t live within driving distance, schedule
a video or FaceTime call when everyone can chat. It’s also a great opportunity for the kids to put on an impromptu performance if they are learning a new instrument, dance routine or sport. They will be happy to see their grandkids talents from across the miles.
