Fun Factory – Museum Exhibit Brings the Manufacturing Experience to Life

“How People Make Things,” exhibit.

Mister Rogers may have moved on from his beloved neighborhood, but his legacy lives on in an exhibit that has moved in to Miami Children’s Museum and set up shop through the beginning of next year.

“How People Make Things,” a hands-on exhibit inspired by factory tours from the “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” TV series, brings the manufacturing experience to life. Through Jan. 5, 2020, kids can learn firsthand about tools and processes used to make everyday objects like boxes or sneakers. The exhibit also explores the people, ideas and technology that transform raw materials into those finished products.

As kids enter the exhibit, they can put on hard hats and vests before getting to work on activities like cutting with hand tools and die cuts, exploring different molding and vacuum tools, deforming pennies and wire, and pulling a lever to fill molds with fluid. They can also assemble a trolley similar to the one from the TV show created by Fred Rogers, who’s father and grandfather worked in factories.
Inspired by their work, Rogers would show videotaped visits to factories on
his PBS show, which aired nationally for 33 years.

Miami Children’s Museum is at 980 MacArthur Causeway. For more information, call 305-373-KIDS(5437) or visit http://www.miamichildrensmuseum.org
